The Immunization Requirements for next school year (2012-2013) are posted on the DHEC website:

http://www.scdhec.gov/health/disease/immunization/immunizations.htm

Changes for the 2012-2013 school year include:

The addition of EIGHTH grade to the requirements for four (4) doses of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis.

Please also encourage the receipt of the following CDC/ACIP-recommended preteen/adolescent and catch-up vaccines: tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4), human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV), and second dose of varicella zoster vaccine (VZV).

Required Change for the 2013-2014 school year:

SC DHEC is providing important information in advance of a future immunization requirement. This requirement does not apply to the 2012-2013 school year but will begin with the 2013-2014 school year.

One (1) dose of Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) administered on or after the 7th birthday will be required for all seventh graders. It is strongly recommended that adolescents who have not yet received a dose of Tdap vaccine be immunized in advance of this requirement.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We have made a recent change in our medication guidelines regarding stocked medications in the school setting.  The nurses will no longer be able to dispense the following medications from the health rooms:  Tylenol, tums, ibuprofen, cough drops, etc. This change will take place beginning on Monday, April 9, 2012.

If your child needs to take any medication at school, whether it be prescription or non-prescription (over-the- counter), you must supply the medication in the original container.  A signed medication consent form for each medication to be administered by the nurse and/or designee must be on file in your child’s school health room. If the medication is a prescription, the physician must sign the form as well.

The health rooms will supply the following items for first-aid purposes:

Vaseline

Saline Eye wash

Aloe Vera

1% Hydrocortisone

If you do not wish for your child to be treated with these items, please provide your written response to your school’s nurse.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Joanne Young, RN

Site Visits

From the Principal

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians and Visitors,

Thank you for visiting the Springfield Middle School website.  We are very proud of the staff, students and building that we have.  We have a comprehensive program in place where young adolescents can succeed and thrive.  Students are our focus and we are very proud to claim one of the best student bodies in the nation.  It is our hope that our students will be academically challenged and that all students are involved in at least one school activity.  I enjoy relaying the message to our students that a happy student is an involved student.

We want our school to be an inviting school where parents, the community, and visitors feel welcome.  It does take a large number of people to educate our students and we want this community of stakeholders to be a part of our school.  Please visit with us and I believe that you will feel the warmth when you walk in the front door.  Your opinion of our school will only make us more inviting.  Please let us know about your visit and/or your experience with Springfield Middle School.

Springfield Middle School is a great place for students to learn and begin the journey to adulthood.  We are proud to be in the middle of the scholastic years of young people.  We will work to provide the best education and transition into high school.  We embrace the middle school philosophy because we believe that it is best for our students. We are teaming in each grade level for our academic subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies).

Thanks for visiting our website.  If you have questions, please call, email, or write.  We welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions.  Thanks for caring about public education and your student.  We know that you would not have visited this site if that were not true.
